Messages from the Nori family
Kesav Nori was a loving uncle, mentor and friend and I learnt several things from him. Lots has been said about origami, he taught me origami, something which I continue to do today. He also tried hard to get me interested in Hindustani music without much success… He taught me and got me interesting in computing and was instrumental in my move from Elec. Engineering to Computer Science. I also spent 2 wonderful years with him at TRDDC in Pune and learnt programming languages and compilers from him – he was fantastic at software abstractions and it came very naturally to him. I still fondly remember all the fantastic stories about the Pascal Compiler among other things – the time spent at TRDCC laid the foundations for my own career in programming languages – he was well ahead of his time and a visionary as far as software tools go. I continue to be inspired by him in several ways, and I shall miss him dearly. – Aditya V Nori

I am his oldest niece, the daughter of his oldest brother. Kesav babai was 9 years old when my parents got married. My mother remembers him offering him to help her with errands outside the house from the age of 10. All of you have so rightly commented on his generosity of spirit and greatness of heart. I can vividly remember my first meeting with Kesav. He did not solicit but commanded respect. Keshav was a pioneer of machine learning and application of computers to literacy and multi lingual learning. His keen interest in arts like calligraphy and origami have their traces in his technical work output too. Prof Nori drew one single diagram depicting the interactions for offshore outsourcing, a systems perspective. There is negligible criss-crossing bringing greater clarity of the problem. Prof Keshav Vithal Nori left for his last journey last night at his son’s residence in Blore. He had been suffering from ill health over last 2-3 years, and passed away in his sleep yesterday .May the departed soul be blessed. Our heartfelt condolences to the entire family and his extended family at TRDDC. Om Shanti . One of the greats in the world of computer science, Prof Nori laid the foundations of software research at TRDDC from the Mangaldas Road days. Many of us were fortunate to have worked closely with him and be mentored by him. Prof Nori also played an active role in developing the computer science academic fraternity in the city of Pune during the 90s. An icon in the world of computer science and language processing, he was a wonderful human being and has touched many over the years. – Lata Prasad

It’s been a great shock that Keshav is no more with us and we will never see him again….
Keshav was one of the gentlest, sweetest, loving and caring person I have ever seen. I vividly remember the day he brought the wooden crib to our house to be used by our second baby whom I was expecting at the time, which was actually made for Lakshmi( his wife and our dear friend) when she was born, in Hyderabad…a beautiful piece of art! Keshav brought the whole thing by himself upto the second floor and then rang the doorbell!! We felt so guilty but he made us feel so cool and comfortable saying it’s perfectly alright…I wanted to see if I could manage!!!
Number of times we have met for dinners etc and he always engaged me and the children in very interesting conversations!!! His love for music and art was amazing!!
His humorous comments always made us laugh!!
It’s so hard to believe that he gone….so soon…so suddenly!!
You will always be missed dear….
What I learnt from my interactions with Prof. Nori was that he taught me “how” to learn and figure out new things. This important teaching guided me all my life going forward. Prof Nori’s M.C. Escher inspired slides are legendary awesome – Sanjay Subramanian
I interacted with Keshav from IIT Kanpur who guided on FORTRAN compilation. He also discussed his Advanced studies in CMU . I spent lot of time with him in TRDDC when we were building tools to promote auto conversion across systems. – Suresh Haridas

I had heard about Prof Nori when he joined TCS, but did not have any interaction. The first time I did that when one of my projects from Switzerland had to be initiated in Pune because the target hardware of VAX was in Pune. He saw me solving crossword puzzles and would chip in. Then he said crosswords is all about parsing. I had never thought about it that way. After that, I had several interactions including the Generic system for UTI, when he was part of the Steering Committee. Most of what he used to tell us went over my head, with my limited comprehension capability. He always used to remind me of my MBA background, which I should leverage. I myself had forgotten I was a MBA – then I told him I am a PGDM. He brought the adjective meta in our lexicon. we all miss him and our deepest condolences to his family. RIP. – Suresh Kumar

My heartfelt condolences to Prof Nori’s family. I worked with him at TIFR in 1977-78, where he was my project guide. He was very generous with his time, making me feel comfortable at TIFR, ensuring we had access to all the resources. He even moved out of his room at TIFR hostel and lived at his parents place so that I could stay in his room for six months. Enjoyed long philosophic discussions on computer programming. I still have a letter he wrote to me in December 1977, where he urged me to “infect some of your colleagues with” the ideas we had been discussing. – Kumar Rao

I have been fortunate to have been under the wings of Prof. Nori literally and figuratively and I owe a lot to Prof. I learnt a lot about Model based development, specifications driven code generation etc. Beyond CS, he would throw open his heart and home to anyone. Nothing is beyond limits at his home. He taught us through his love for finer aspects of life, be it MDR’s LP records, liqueurs, food etc. Saab, you will be thoroughly missed. Thank you for being there for so many of us. I have many memories of my time with him at Pune. A true teacher in every sense of the word. To Prof Nori’s family : In my brief stay at TRDDC Prof Nori managed to prepare me for being a researcher – whether it be programming languages, system software or a peek into the coming of age of AI – however in my arrogance of youth at that time I did not quite realize the value of what I learned however it was this foundation which has helped me be a success at IBM Research. When I started working with Prof Nori, I was new to computer science, new to research and software engineering. Prof Nori shaped my thoughts and approach. Engineering approach, systems thinking, formal models and so on. He pushed me to apply the approach in every possible challenge. He mentored me, pushed me think beyond, enquire, explore. Prof Nori was such a multifaceted person comfortable on virtually any
Subject. His ability to explain totally abstract ideas which normally would go way over ones head was amazing. He was a master communicator . He was such a calm, unflappable and affable gentlemen, who truly is one of a kind. Huge loss to all of us. Sincere condolences to the family.
Prof Nori was a passionate teacher, great philosopher and excellent human being, – personal touch in everything that he did, jovial as the same time very forthright.
I was fortunate to get his guidance on many occasions. He taught us to look at every problem / solution wholistically – with a top-down approach – meta approach – PQCC, Object VLISP, meta modeling.
His emphasis was on going into root cause / analysis, understanding the theory behind it – however difficult – make an effort to understand the basics at least, if it is too difficult. Based on his advice, I attended few courses on fundamental/first principles of software programming – after retirement!
On a personal note, he helped me tremendously giving me strong moral support and mentoring when I was going through personal issues. He was the one who opened to me the doors to TRDDC. Those days a transfer to Pune was very difficult – not alone getting a transfer but also to retain the transfer. He supported me in those initial tough days. – Uday Ramteerthkar
I was so fortunate to have worked under guidance of Prof. Nori for 7 years in very early phase of my career. He would not tell us what to do, but showed us different ways to look at the problems thru questions or articles or papers he would ask us to read. He was our guide and mentor. What I learned under his guidance has helped me thru the career. All my success is due to those 7 years with him.

Prof. Nori was a very soft spoken and thorough gentleman. Very humble and accessible despite his intellectual and professional achievements. An epitome of “It is nice to be important but it is more important to be nice.” Remember that when I was in Japan, he had stayed with me for about a week.
